Cerrillos was once a bustling mining town famous for turquoise, lead, silver, and other minerals. The surrounding hills are dotted with old mine shafts, and turquoise from this region has been used for centuries by Indigenous peoples and later by Spanish settlers. A traditional New Mexico village of older adobes and quaint shops near the Rio Grande River, Cerrillos is home to artists, writers, and craftspeople who reside in the peaceful, rural landscape. The town has preserved its 19th-century feel with dirt streets, old storefronts, art studios, and simple adobe structures. Lots are sometimes rugged or irregular due to the town’s historic layout, but they offer expansive views, privacy, and a sense of place unlike anywhere else in the region. Outdoor enthusiasts enjoy access to the nearby Cerrillos Hills State Park, riding stables, scenic drives, bird watching and clear night skies ideal for stargazing.
Nestled along the scenic Turquoise Trail, Madrid is one of New Mexico’s most distinctive and artistic small towns. Once a booming coal-mining settlement and later a near-ghost town, Madrid has transformed into a vibrant, free-spirited community known for its galleries, live music, quirky shops, andhistoric charm. Madrid feels other-worldly to visitors. Colorful storefronts line the main street, artists work out of converted miners’ cabins, and the town regularly hosts festivals, studio tours, and local music events. Its lively weekend scene attracts visitors while still preserving a relaxed, small-town authenticity. Homes here are early 20th century wooden structures painted a variety of colors. The John Travolta movie, “Wild Hogs” was filmed in Madrid, which is also a favorite filming location for Westerns due to its authentic atmosphere.
